How about a follow up article

On what they do with all this money they make and why the student athletes who are responsible for bringing all this money in can’t make some for themselves?

It’s all I’m willing to give for rhetorical questions

about a tired debate. It’s as tired as the bowl playoff debate. I’m not wanking at your position, I’m wanking at your wanky comment. But I’ll pretend for a moment that you don’t know that there are already a thousand articles out there about the merits of paying or not paying players. Here is the debate we would have that would end up in stalemate.

Person A: I can’t believe these schools make all of this money for the schools and don’t get paid.

Person B: They do get paid, it’s a scholarship. Depending on where you go to school, this could be a lot of money.

A: Not near enough money considering that these schools make millions off them.

B: Well not all of the players are superstars. Do you want to pay players unequal salaries?

A: No. But the fact that they get nothing is ridiculous.

B: They don’t get nothing. They get a scholarship.

A: That’s chicken feed money compared to the millions.

First Stalemate reached.

A. It’s a joke that these “non-profit” entities are hoarding millions of dollars.

B. They are non profit. They’re educational institutions. The AD doesn’t take home the budget surplus.

A. No, but he gets paid a million dollars. So do the coaches. The players get a scholarship. Hoo rah.

B. They earn that money because they win games for the school.

A. Professors educate students. Isn’t that the primary mission of your “non profit” institution? They get forced furloughs.

B. But the football team gets a lot of attention for the university. When people donate money to be eligible for tickets, a lot of the time it isn’t to the Athletic Dept. It’s too other facets of the university.

A. But a lot of times it is to the Athletic Dept. Have you seen a media guide? A lot of players receive the “John Doe memorial scholarship” that some family set up so the athletic dept. gets around even having to pay for the freaking scholarship.

B. But most of it helps the university as a whole.

A. Not as much as it should.

Second Stalemate

B. Are you happy? Schools are gonna start giving stipends.

A. #1 It’s not enough. #2 There are schools that are still trying to keep that from happening.

B. Because they can’t afford it. Recruits would naturally favor schools that give out a full stipend.

A. That’s how capitalism works. Besides, it’s crap that these players can’t go into the nfl draft. It’s basically keeping them in a work for free farm system.

B. That’s the nfl’s rules, not the ncaa’s.

…on and on and on and on. In all honesty, I’m more of a person B. So undoubtedly, the little conversation I typed up there probably is slanted a bit more that way. But if pressed, I could argue person A just as easily. It’s tired. I’m tired. Pay players, don’t pay players. But just end all the soapbox crap.

Sorry, you’ve been arguing with the wrong people

It wasn’t actually a “wanky” comment, it was a legitimate question that never gets answered.

Some minor points:

-Not a single word about the risk of potentially lifelong injuries at stake on the football field. That is why NFL players make so much, and why college players should be entitled to something.

-Scholarship=diploma=almost nothing in today’s job market. Wait until they try and enter the workforce with that almighty college degree. Unless it’s in a specific field, they could find themselves donning a blue Walmart vest.

-The coaches win games for the school or the players do? And no doubt Sandusky’s done great things for Penn State.

-A lot of professors are overpaid for doing what a computer program could do, and frankly I’d love to see salaries published for NCAA personnel.

-There was never any suggestion that the school’s pay the students, only that the students be able to make money on the side off their own efforts. And yeah, that includes if they want to accept gifts from agents because they earned it through their own efforts. If the NCAA wants its “cut” because said actions occur on their football field, that’s a different story. Taking away Reggie Bush’s Heismann? And what was so godawful about Pryor selling memorabilia?

-And really, is it so terrible to ask how the NCAA and various institutions spend the money? Or is that “secret”?

-But most importantly, if you find this question so odious, why not ignore it and move on to the next article instead offering the juvenile IMspeak?
