Oil prices are controlled by the 1 percenters

March 1 — To the Editor:
I keep hearing comments on the price of gas and how it is the fault of the current administration. No thinking person should be fooled by this. It should be obvious that the price of petroleum products is dependant on the vagaries of international politics and the cupidity of major oil investors, most of whom are among the 1 percent we hear so much about. President Bush could influence oil prices because he was one of these investors.
President Obama does have plans to get us off the gas-price roller coaster, but it’s by using alternate energy sources, which take time to start up or change over.
Maybe some attention should be paid to local products as feedstocks for alcohol production, such as cull potatoes in northern Maine, and other methods of separating the alcohol, such as freezing instead of heat distillation. It uses less energy, and the folks up there make applejack by freezing hard cider, so it works. I’m told alcohol will run in a home oil burner with a little modification. Now, can we get the price low enough?
